about this painting: Mary depicts designs associated with the soakage water site of Pulinyanu, which is north of the Nyirrpi community. The circles in the work represent the rock holes while the lines represent the sandhills in the surrounding area. In ancestral times a group of women gathered to perform the dances and sing the songs associated with the area. While there they also ate wild fig which they collected from nearby trees. They also gathered wood to make ‘wana‘ (digging sticks). Upon completion of the ceremonies the women continued their travels east.
