Jakamarra was born in the bush and saw his first white-fella when he was a young man. He recalls seeing white people with camels and the tracks of motor cars and thinking they were some time of cardija (monster). He survived the Conniston massacre by hiding and walking more than 400kms to Haasts Bluff, which was the first supply station in the area. Jack settled in Yuendumu and was introduced to painting when he followed his then wife to Darwin when she was working at Kormilda College. Jack is renowned as a great storyteller and is a star of the television series Bush Mechanics. He has many children and grandchildren.
