EDITH WINGULYA LYONS
(c. 1942 – )
Edith Wingulya Lyons was a respected Aboriginal artist from the Ngaanyatjarra Lands in Western Australia, celebrated for her vibrant paintings that reflect a deep connection to her Country, culture, and the Tjukurpa (Dreaming).
Born around 1942 in Warnarn, east of the Gibson Desert, Edith spent much of her life in Blackstone, where she was an active and valued member of the local community and the Papulankutja Artists collective. A skilled and dedicated painter, she passed on her artistic knowledge and passion to her daughter, Mildred Lyons, who is also an accomplished artist.
Edith’s richly layered works often depict the renowned Seven Sisters Dreaming story. In this ancestral narrative, the sisters are pursued by a man who wishes to marry them; they ultimately escape his advances by ascending into the sky, where they became the Pleiades constellation.
